Galena Artist Ioannis Karalias Presents New Paintings Inspired by Galena and the Mississippi River at the Tsichritzis Foundation in Athens, Greece

GALENA, ILLINOIS (APRIL 6, 2020) — The internationally renowned Galena artist and painter, Ioannis Karalias, presents his latest, new paintings inspired by Galena and the Mississippi River in a large solo painting exhibition at The Tsichritzis Foundation of Fine Arts in Athens, Greece.
The exhibition, "FLASHBACK," features landscape paintings Karalias painted during summer 2019.
The exhibition opens this week at The Tsichritzis Foundation of Fine Arts (Kassaveti 18, 145 62 Kifissia, Athens) and continues through May 15.
Greek author and art critic, Rania Kapeliari writes about the artist’s latest work:
“He often puts himself at risk. He continually changes his subjects, introduces elements of his own experiences in his paintings, and he rejects the classical depiction of the objective world.”
“The human form is the central axis of his work. In claustrophobic spaces or out in the open, his shady, lonely bodies, crippled by their choices, struggle to break free from their chains.”
“There are very few portraits among his works. Gestures that look like hieroglyphics and a sizeable yellow fountain that comes alive out of a child's drawing to cool off all the tension. The sea hugs an emotional figure."
“He goes against the conventional rules of painting color on canvas, often, using his hands to achieve some kind of bold or somber, but nonetheless, passionate effect.”
“He is a transcendentalist who has held the opinion that the material world is one of the numerous realities perceived by human awareness," Kapeliari stated.
A catalog with the artist's artworks has been published on the occasion of the exhibition by the Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd. and is available at The Chicago Athenaeum in Galena.
